The Source of The Nile

The Source of The Nile

The Source of the Nile, located in Jinja district, Uganda, marks the origin of the world’s longest river, the Nile. This natural wonder begins its journey from Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest freshwater lake and the second-largest globally after Lake Superior in the USA. The name “Nile” is derived from the ancient Greek “Neilos,” meaning a river valley. European expeditions to Uganda were spurred by the quest to discover this source, with John Hannington Speke achieving this on 3rd August 1858.

The Nile River flows for 6,696 kilometers, traversing four African countries before emptying into the Mediterranean Sea in Egypt. Its basin, spanning 3.4 million square kilometers, drains water from 11 African nations including Uganda, Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Eritrea, Kenya, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The river is historically divided into the Blue Nile and White Nile, with the Blue Nile originating in the Ethiopian Highlands and joining the White Nile in Sudan. In Uganda, segments are also known as the Victoria Nile and Albert Nile.

The Nile starts at Rippon Falls, now submerged due to the Owen Falls Dam, which has changed the landscape but not the allure of the area for tourists. At the exact point where the river separates from Lake Victoria, a monument commemorates this historic discovery, enriching visitors with detailed explanations from tour guides. The Nile’s ancient Egyptian name, “River Aur,” translates to “black” due to the river’s distinctive black residue.

History of the Source of the Nile

The source of the Nile, the world’s longest river, was historically discovered by John Hanning Speke on 3rd August 1858. Speke, the son of a military officer in England’s West Country, joined the East India Company army at seventeen. In 1854, he embarked on an East African expedition led by Captain Richard Burton, who had previously visited Mecca disguised as an Arab pilgrim.

In 1856, Speke and Burton undertook another expedition to East Africa, sponsored by the Royal Geographical Society. Early in 1858, they discovered Lake Tanganyika. However, illness forced them to retreat to the coast. Undeterred, Speke continued exploring and in August 1858, he encountered a vast expanse of pale-blue water which he named Lake Victoria, believing it to be the Nile’s source. This discovery was contentious, with Burton skeptical of Speke’s conclusion.

Lake Victoria, while often considered the Nile’s source, is fed by the Kagera River, which enters near Bukoba, Tanzania. The Kagera’s origins are disputed, with various tributaries contesting the title of the Nile’s most distant source.

In Uganda, the Nile leaves Lake Victoria at Ripon Falls near Jinja, flowing northward as the Victoria Nile for about 130 kilometers to Lake Kyoga. From Lake Kyoga, the Nile continues westward for approximately 200 kilometers, forming a semicircle south of Masindi Port, passing through Karuma Falls, and eventually reaching Murchison Falls. The river then flows into Lake Albert, forming a notable delta before continuing north as the Albert Nile.
