Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is part of the wider Virunga conservation region that also includes the volcanoes national park in Rwanda and the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park is located on the south-western corner of Uganda in the town of Kisoro. Mgahinga was upgraded from a game reserve into a full national park in 1991 mainly to protect the mountain gorillas that were in frequent conflicts with humans living within and outside the park.
Situated between elevations of 2,227 meters to 4,127 meters, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park benefits from its location within the Virunga Massif, shared among Uganda, Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park), and the Democratic Republic of Congo (Virunga National Park). This area is renowned for its protection of eight volcanoes, including Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Muhavura, Mount Mikeno, Mount Karisimbi, Mount Bisoke, Mount Nyiragongo, and Mount Nyamuragira.
Established as a wildlife sanctuary, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park was formally gazetted in 1991, following the resettlement of the Batwa people who previously coexisted with the mountain gorillas. This conservation effort aimed to safeguard these gentle primates from extinction in the wild and is overseen by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, which manages and protects the park’s rich biodiversity.
