Ruvubu National Park

Ruvubu National Park, located in northeastern Burundi, is the largest national park in the country, spanning 508 square kilometers. It borders the provinces of Karuzi, Muyinga, Gankuzo, and Ruyigi, and lies just 216 kilometers from Bujumbura. Officially designated as Parc National de la Ruvubu in 1980, the park is named after the Ruvubu River, which runs through it. This park preserves the last remnants of Burundi’s once extensive natural grassland ecosystem.

Ruvubu National Park is renowned for its rich biodiversity. Visitors will be captivated by the variety of flora and fauna, including unique habitats that support a wide range of animal, bird, and plant species.

Wildlife Highlights

• Mammals: Hippos, Nile crocodiles, Cape buffaloes, and various duiker species. The park also hosts five primate species: vervet monkeys, blue monkeys, Senegal bushbabies, red colobus monkeys, and olive baboons.
• Birds: Over 400 bird species, including warblers, babblers, sunbirds, and the papyrus gonolek.
• Other Wildlife: Butterflies, towering trees, and proteas.

Human settlements were removed from the park to preserve its endangered wildlife, providing a natural habitat free from human encroachment.
