Rusizi National Park

About Rusizi National Park

International tourists and locals alike frequently visit Rusizi National Park, one of Burundi’s most popular national parks. Officially known as Parc National de la Rusizi, the park is located in the Rusizi plains, north of Lake Tanganyika, just 15km northwest of Bujumbura city and a few kilometers from the Democratic Republic of Congo border.

Rusizi National Park consists of two distinct areas divided by the Bujumbura-Uvira road. The larger section extends to the eastern bank of the Rusizi River, which gives the park its name. This area is characterized by acacia trees, shrubs, and grasslands. The other section is primarily a delta of the Rusizi River, which flows into Lake Tanganyika, featuring small islands, water streams, channels, and papyrus beds.

Designated as a Ramsar Site, the park was initially established to protect the hippos thriving in the Rusizi River delta, along with other wildlife such as sitatungas, Gustave, and Nile crocodiles. The park is home to an estimated 200 bird species, including Sharpe’s pied babbler, red-chested sunbird, and baglafetch weaver, as well as migratory birds like the white-winged tern.

Tourists can enjoy various activities in Rusizi Park, including:

Walking Safaris

Walking safaris in Rusizi Park offer a fantastic way to explore the area. Guided by an armed ranger and your safari guide, these walks allow travelers to discover the park’s diverse flora and fauna, such as antelopes, sitatungas, various monkey species, and numerous birds. Guides share their extensive knowledge and are available to answer any questions.

Bird Watching

With around 200 bird species in Rusizi Park, bird watching is a popular activity. Travelers can follow tracks and paths in search of different birds. A bird guide and a good pair of binoculars enhance the experience, helping spot colorful species even from a distance. Birds to see include Sharpe’s pied babbler, red-chested sunbird, and baglafetch weaver, as well as migratory birds like the white-winged tern.

Boat Safaris

Boat safaris on the Rusizi River are an excellent way to spot animals such as hippos and Nile crocodiles. Aquatic birds and other park animals can also be seen along the shores as they come to drink or bathe.

Sport Fishing

Sport fishing is available on the Rusizi River. Travelers can catch fish and either release them or have them cooked on-site, or even cook them themselves. A license is required for sport fishing, which your tour operator can arrange.

Getting to Rusizi National Park

Rusizi National Park is accessible by various routes and roads, and also by air. The best way to get there is by a 4WD vehicle, which allows travelers to explore the countryside extensively.

When to Visit Rusizi National Park

Rusizi National Park is open year-round, but the best time to visit is during the dry season from June to September and December to February. During these months, walking safaris are more enjoyable as the paths are less slippery and muddy. The wet months can still offer a great experience for those who prefer fewer crowds and lush landscapes.

Travelers interested in visiting Rusizi National Park should contact trusted tour operators knowledgeable about the park and Burundi. Plan a memorable safari to Rusizi Park, or combine it with other destinations like Kibira National Park, or activities in Rwanda such as chimpanzee tracking and gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park or Bwindi.
