Gishora Drum Sanctuary
Gishora Drum Sanctuary: A Cultural Landmark in Burundi

Gishora Drum Sanctuary is one of the most prominent drum sites in Burundi, located atop a hill just 7 km from the urban center of Gitega and 200 meters along the Gitega-Ngozi route. Founded by King Mwezi Gisabo after his victory over the rebellious Chief Ntibirangwa, the site is now managed by a local community of descendants from the ancient ‘Abanyigisaka’ lineage, who were ritualists with privileges from the royal court.
Historical Significance of Drums in Burundi
In Burundi, drums symbolized the political power of the monarchy and were played during special ceremonies by the families of the ‘Abatimbo.’ These ceremonies included royal enthronements, sowing festivals, and the funerals of kings. Drumming was an integral part of the country’s cultural and political life.
The Ritual Drums
The sanctuary houses two significant ritual drums that are never beaten:
- Ruciteme (“the one for whom we clear the forest”)
- Murimirwa (“the one for whom we cultivate”)
These drums symbolize the farming vocation and fertility, reflecting the characteristics of the King.
The Normal Drums
The sanctuary also features the ‘Ingendanyi’ (retinue) drums, which the Batimbo played on special national occasions. These drums, along with the ritual ones, continue to hold cultural and historical significance for the local community and visitors alike.
