Lake Mburo National Park is Uganda’s smallest national park and is the closest park to both Kampala and Entebbe. It covers an area of 260 square kilometers and is situated approximately 240 kilometers from Kampala and only 30 kilometers from Mbarara, the largest town in western Uganda. Lake Mburo National Park was initially gazetted in 1933 as a controlled hunting area and later upgraded to a game reserve in 1963. It achieved national park status in 1983 under the Obote regime, a decision partly influenced by political motives to punish the Banyankore pastoralists, who were believed to support anti-Obote rebels. These pastoralists, who had occupied the area and used it for grazing, were evicted without compensation, leading to protests. The rangeland outside the park was then subdivided into small plots for subsistence farming.
The park’s name originates from a local legend about two brothers, Mburo and Kigarama. They lived in the low-lying savannah plains, traditionally known as Kaaro karungi. Kigarama had a dream forewarning of heavy rains that would cause flooding. While Mburo dismissed the warning, Kigarama heeded his dream and moved to the hills. The floods came as foretold, drowning Mburo and his property. Consequently, the lake was named after Mburo and the surrounding hills after Kigarama. This story adds a cultural dimension to the lake and is often shared during tours.
