Overview
The Albertine Rift region straddling along DRC, Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda borders and stretching over a North-South distance of 1,000 km have unique montane forest biozone with a high degree of endemism in Africa . The Albertine Rift is teem with bird species accounting for over half of Africa’s birds while almost forty percent of all mammal kinds are found in this region just to name but a few.The largest number of endemic mammals, birds and amphibians inhabit here than any other area in Africa.
The snow capped mountains named Rwenzori are one among the only two places on earth where mountain gorillas thrive. Also at big risk are chimpanzees, elephants among others Some of its key attractions as cited earlier are mountain gorillas but others include chimpanzees which stand under threat together with elephants.
Targets Species during the 17 Days Albertine Birding Safari:

Day 1: Entebbe Arrival
You’ll be picked up by your professional birder upon arrival in Entebbe who will take you to your hotel for overnights. If you come in earlier, feel free to visit the Entebbe Botanical Gardens where Ugandan birds are well represented.
Day 2: Kibale National Park Birding Migration
Leave for Kibale National Park early this morning, visiting over 335 different kinds of birds and a variety of primates including Chimpanzees, Red Colobus and L’Hoest’s Monkey on the way. The journey also allows spotting some of Uganda’s rare bird species along the road as we drive through different habitats throughout Kibale such as moist evergreen forests and savannahs; thus making it an ultimate place for birdwatching.
Day 3: Birding in Kibale National Park
Go birdwatching at Kibale National Park the whole day. You will have breakfast early in the morning before having a walk in the forest where you may decide to go chimpanzee tracking. Important birds like Grey-winged Robin and Green-breasted Pitta exist in this park. In order to maximize the extent of species seen, we will spend our afternoon moving around Kibale’s main road looking for other birds.
Day 4: Birding Tour to Semuliki
You will go to Semuliki Forest, which is a distinctive combination of Congo-Basin vegetation in Uganda, after an early breakfast. This is a unique opportunity for birdwatching in East Africa to view species that are hard to find elsewhere. The rich ecosystem of the forest is a haven for birdwatchers.
Day 5: Birdwatching the Kirumya Trail All Day
We are going to spend the entire day birdwatching in Semuliki along the Kirumya Trail. Taking along a packed lunch, you’ll stroll around the woodland looking for various hornbills, piculets, and other local bird species.
Day 5: Whole Day Birding on the Kirumya Trail
Today is dedicated to a full day of birding along the Kirumya Trail in Semuliki. With packed lunch in hand, you’ll explore the forest, searching for a variety of hornbills, piculets, and other bird species that are characteristic of this area.
Day 6: Morning Bird Watching With Transfer to Fort Portal
The morning includes watching birds in Semuliki Forest before heading out to Fort Portal where one will prepare for the next day’s bird watching adventure. The drive boasts wonderful views and some moments where you can stop over and spot some birds.
Day 7: Rwenzori National Park Bird Watching
Leave early for a full day’s birding expedition across Rwenzori National Park famous for numerous endemics from Albertine Rift. The high altitude situation contains dissimilar inhabitants that would finally please enthusiastic ornithologists hoping to see endangered species and rare birds species.
Day 8: Queen Elizabeth National Park birdwatching
A visit to Queen Elizabeth Park early in the morning is crucial if you want to see over 610 different kinds of birds. This unforgettable day dedicated to observing birds will also allow one to catch sight of elephants, lions, leopards and other wild animals. As one of the best places for birdwatching, it has a unique habitat comprising savannas and wetland areas.
Day 9: Birding and Game Drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park
You will wake up for a morning game drive that also serves as a birding tour before going back to your lodge for lunch. An afternoon boat trip will allow you to see water birds and wild animals found in the park while on the Kazinga Channel.
Day 10:Bwindi birdwatching
Your destination for the day is Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site distinguished by vast woods and an abundance of bird species. Given that some bird species may be uncommon in Uganda, there’s a potential we’ll observe a variety of birds as we go.
Day 11: Buhoma, Bwindi Birding
During Buhoma, Uganda it is a full day and ideal for bird watching. A lot of people know this place to contains an amazing variety of bird species with numerous Albertine rift endemic birds being present among them. Birding here could be tough but rewarding at the same time due to lush forests.
Day 12: Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi
This is among the most awaited moments of your safari when you go on the search for endangered mountain gorillas. In such a memorable day in Bwindi, this adventure provides an opportunity to see these gentle giants in their natural habitat.
Day 13: Birding through the “Neck” to Ruhiija
Birding continues as you travel through the “Neck” to Ruhija. This region is known for its collection of birds in a relatively small area. There are many opportunities for birding along the road from seeing them locked in the forests to those exposed in open habitats.
Day 14: Birding in Mubwindi Swamp
This day is mainly dedicated to bird watching at Mubwindi Swamp which has among others the Grauer’s Broadbill among the rare birds found within it. This makes it a prime destination for all hardcore birders whose quest includes serious exploration of remote places and unpolluted cultures.
Day 15: Birding in the Bamboo Section
Explore the bamboo segment of Bwindi where you will search for endemic species in the Albertine Rift and Highlands. The bamboo forest offers a distinctive environment that is home to a specialized set of birds; thus making this day especially interesting for birding enthusiasts.
Day 16: Birding and Return to Entebbe
On the way back to Entebbe, several stopovers allow birdwatchers to have another chance of seeing some birds they may have previously missed. Hence, you should expect to finish your birding trip with a bang since the return road bears varying habitats.
Day 17: Departure
After breakfast, you will then be taken to the airport for your departure flight and this marks the end of your 17-day Albertine Birding Safari. The journey into Uganda’s extensive bird regions will remain engraved in your memory forever and leave you with a long list.
