Day 1: Arrival at Entebbe International Airport in Uganda and transport to your lodge
Upon stepping out of the Entebbe International Airport arrivals section, a representative from Frero Adventures will be waiting for you with new friends and delicious food. Entebbe, situated by the shores of Lake Victoria is an extraordinary introduction to Uganda’s avian life. If there’s time we’ll take a trip to the Entebbe Botanical Gardens within the afternoon for some bird watching. Expect species like: Orange Weaver, Palm-nut Vulture, African Fish Eagle, Gray Parrot, Ross’s Turaco and Great Blue Turaco which are all ideal for starting your journey in birding.
Day 2: Birding in Mabamba Wetland & Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park
After breakfast, we leave early in the morning heading towards Mabamba Swamp (Ramsar site) which is also an Important Bird Area located on Lake Victoria’s shores. One would be lucky enough to spot this rare bird called Shoebill whose colonies are known to exist here as well as other African Pygmy Goose Lesser Jacana Blue-breasted Bee-eater among other species when we explore it via canoeing mode. We shall drive back after the birding session since our destination is Lake Mburo National Park, having arrived there evening time when it would be convenient for having supper and passing the night under its stars.
Day 3: Full Day Birding in Lake Mburo National Park
During the course of a morning Gary went into Mburo national park because of its lakes, but there were also some acacia savannas presenting themselves. The birds which should be spotted are Red-faced Barbet, Tabora cisticola amongst others including Golden-tailed Woodpecker. In the afternoon we will go sailing on Lake Mburo while observing kingfishers African Fish Eagles; This time you will sight threaten them too like the Hippos and Crocs.
Day 4: Drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park & Bird Ruhija in the Evening
After an early breakfast we leave for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park passing through beautiful climates of south western Uganda. In the afternoon we shall eat lunch at the hotel then rest before going for birds watching at Ruhija sector, known for Lagden’s BushShrike, Handsome francolin, and Dusky crimsonwing among other species out there.
Day 5: Birding at Mubwindi Swamp in Ruhija Sector
Today we will explore the Mubwindi Swamp which is a premier bird watching destination located in Bwindi’s Ruhija sector.The descent towards the swamp can be quite a challenge but it gives us an opportunity to see rarest and localized grass birds like Grauer’s Broadbill or African Green Broadbill. Other noteworthy birds are Carruthers’s Cisticola, Grauer’s Rush Warbler and Blue-headed Sunbird.
Day 6: Birdwatching the Ruhija and Buhoma Sectors in Bwindi
After breakfast, we’ll take a short birding walk around Ruhija before moving on to Buhoma sector which has rich birdlife including Great Blue Turaco, Rwenzori Turaco and Black-billed Turaco among others .As said earlier on apart from birding also expect many colorful butterflies along with a possible encounter with L’Hoest’s Monkey.
Day 7: Birding in Buhoma Sector or Optional Gorilla Trekking
Spend a whole day at Buhoma sector watching birds along its waterfall trail. Alternatively you could go for a gorilla trekking adventure. After an introduction from knowledgeable local guides, searching for mountain gorillas most often takes 2-8 hours on foot. Spending time with these gentle giants is so moving. Later go back to Buhoma again trying to find species such as the Bar-tailed Trogon and Rwenzori Turaco.
Day 8: Travel to Queen Elizabeth National Park & Birding along the Kazinga Channel
From there we drive into Queen Elizabeth National Park passing through Ishasha sector known for its tree climbing lions. After lunch at Mweya we boarded a boat for a tour along the Kazinga channel. This boat trip provides close up views of African buffaloes, elephants , hippopotamuses, crocs and many more along with avian creatures such as African open billed stork and yellow billed stork among other water birds.
Day 9: Birding in Queen Elizabeth National Park
In Queen Elizabeth National Park, revel in a whole day of bird watching as you traverse different ecosystems including Mweya Peninsula, Lake Kikorongo and the Kasenyi savannah plains where there are these species like Temminck’s Courser , Martial Eagle and Blue Quail. This park is home to mammals like Lions, Elephants as well as Uganda’s Kobs.
Day 10: Short Bird Walk in Maramagambo Forest & Transfer Back to Entebbe for Departure
We shall have our breakfast then walk for a while through Maramagambo Forest where we can find species such as White-naped Pigeon, Chestnut Wattle-eye, and Scaly-breasted Illadopsis.Later we will return back with you to Entebbe for your departure flight marking the end of an incredible two weeks birding trip organized by Frero Adventures.
